FLAVORx Assists Non-Profit Pharmacy to Enhance Health Care Services in Underserved Cincinnati Area
Bethesda, MD (PRWeb) March 22, 2007 -- Pharmacy Over-the-Rhine, the first-ever non-profit pharmacy, opened in January 2007 to serve one of Cincinnati's poorest and most crime-ridden neighborhoods. Seeing the limited access for health care and pharmacy services in low-income areas, pharmacist Chad Worz partnered with Crossroad Health Center to bring the full-service pharmacy to the community. To enhance its patient care services, Pharmacy Over-the-Rhine will include the FLAVORx behind-the-counter flavoring system to improve the taste of liquid medications. FLAVORx has offered the system to Pharmacy Over-the-Rhine at cost and will waive annual renewal fees. In addition, the company has also provided complimentary FLAVORiT kits to the pharmacy to alleviate taste issues with over-the-counter liquids such as cough syrups, analgesics and infant formulas.
Low-income neighborhoods often lack the luxury of having several pharmacies in the area, but the importance of access to medication is equally, if not more important in these areas where access to healthcare can be lacking. Pharmacy Over-the-Rhine accepts prescriptions from uninsured patients, patients that rely on federal programs as well as prescriptions from people with insurance. Prescriptions however are not free; patients pay a small fee, just enough to cover the cost of drug expenses.
"Our pharmacy dispenses a significant quantity of iron supplement, due to the fact that approximately 70% of the 2 years of age and under population in this area of the city is anemic", says Susan Lattier, Pharmacist in Charge at Pharmacy Over-the-Rhine. "Because this is such a widely used health supplement in the pediatric unit, we were aware of the necessity to address the unpleasant taste. The donation by FLAVORx will greatly facilitate ease of use for this vital community health need. I and other staff at Pharmacy Over-the-Rhine would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and we all concur that the generous folks at FLAVORx are awesome!"
FLAVORx President and CEO, Kenny Kramm is equally excited to have the opportunity to work with Pharmacy Over-the-Rhine. "The story of Pharmacy Over-the-Rhine is so heartwarming- they are an incredible group of individuals who have gone out of their way to increase access to healthcare in an underserved and impoverished community. That is not something that everyone is willing to step up to the plate and achieve. This is a truly noble effort, and one that I am happy to be involved with," says Kramm.
FLAVORx reports show that the best flavors for masking taste in iron supplements and vitamins are Grape and Raspberry. Though in general, among pediatric patients, Bubblegum, Grape and Watermelon have been long-time favorites for antibiotics, corticosteroids and cough/cold medications.
